If you’re in the market — and, you know, have $24.5 million to spare — you cannot miss the Casbah Cove. The Palm Desert mansion, tucked inside the prestigious Bighorn Golf Club, is on the market. “Built over the course of four years by talented craftsmen led by one of the most creative design teams, Casbah Cove is unlike anything you have ever seen,” Bighorn writes on its website. The 16,800 square-feet of indoor and outdoor living includes only four bedrooms. But it has two spas (one indoor and one outdoor), eight sculptured fireplaces and three outdoor dining rooms. Don’t miss the hookah room with seating for 20 people, disappearing doors and a 20-foot screen that rises from the ground, according attorney at law to the website. Or the 75-foot lap infinity pool and 40-foot round reverse infinity-edge swimming pool (“for sunning”). And don’t forget to invite me to your house warming party.

But Paul Thiel studied the economics of solar power for seven years before he took the leap and converted his Palm Springs Motors, a Ford-Lincoln store in Cathedral City, Calif. For a long time, he couldn't make the numbers work. "We started studying it in 2005. The price of the solar system was too high," Thiel says. "It didn't justify to where you could make it pencil, where it would pay off in a reasonable amount of time. The payback would have been 10 to 12 years." Waiting paid off in a big way for Thiel, 61, a South Dakota native who worked for Ford Motor Co.
